While we now associate Día de Muertos with Pixar’s 2017 hit Coco, the most recognizable symbol of the holiday may be the calacas and calaveras (skeletons and skulls). A tradition that originated in México, Día de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead) is a holiday celebrated on November 1 where the dead are honored with festivals and lively celebrations. A typically Latin American custom, it combines indigenous Aztec ritual with Catholicism, brought to the region by Spanish conquistadores. This past autumn, I was lucky enough to experience the festivities from San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato and Guadalajara.
